An asteroid as big as a skyscraper is set to pass close to Earth

Asteroid 2011 MW1 is expected to come close to our planet on July 25, hurtling through space at an astonishing speed, according to the US space agency NASA.

Asteroid 2011 MW1, which is 380 feet wide, will pass Earth at a speed of 28,946 kilometers per hour. Despite its proximity, NASA has assured that it poses no threat, passing at a safe distance of 2.4 million miles.

Although this asteroid is listed among near-Earth objects, it is not marked as hazardous.

NASA’s list of near-Earth asteroids includes about 35,000 such objects.Tracking this near-Earth asteroid, the size of a tall building, is part of NASA’s ongoing efforts to monitor space debris.

Made up of particles left over from the creation of the Solar System, most asteroids orbit the Sun, with many residing in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

NASA keeps a watchful eye on these asteroids to protect them from potential threats to Earth. Notably, the agency’s experimental DART mission successfully hit the asteroid Dimorphos.

The mission’s goal was to slightly alter the asteroid’s orbital path, a feat NASA hailed as a success.
